Video Premiere: Begun – “Dora”

beGun - 01- Borja Conde (2013)

While beGun (a.k.a. Gunsal Moreno) hasn’t been on the scene for very long, in the last couple of years he has already become one of the hottest musical properties to emerge from Barcelona. On December 18, Ham House Records will release his new single, “Dora.” Africa was the inspiration for the track, and beGun did his homework.

“Before we started working on the project we studied the sounds (spiritual music, tone patterns, traditional instruments etc), as well as the visual narrative (political conflicts, immigration, spirituality),” he says.

The video, directed by Borja V. Conde, revolves around sex workers and the harsh realities of their everyday lives. Accompanying the original track will be remixes from Applescal and Blackbird Blackbird. And if you want to see beGun work his magic in front of an audience, you can catch him at XOYO in London, on a bill with Booka Shade and others.

Premiere: Bimas – “Waiting For The Rhum”

Back in the day Muzik  a London-based DJ magazine which I used to contribute to — ran a regular feature called Bedroom Bedlam. A monthly contest where unknown jocks would compete for bragging rights and the opportunity to spin at a major club, it gave a leg up to a wealth of new talent including James Zabiela. Liverpool-based Yousef took top honors in October 1997 (check his mix here!), and as his career as a DJ/producer has blossomed nicely ever since then thanks to a lot of talent and hard work. While he’s now an established force on the global stage, Yousef has continually paid his success forward by cultivating new talent through his Circus Recordings (which is also a traveling club event).

This week Circus will release Selector Part 3, a compendium of tracks crafted by mixmasters Yousef believes in. We’re thrilled to world premiere veteran Italian producer Bimas’ “Waiting For The Rhum,” a badass four-to-the-floor house groover. Get a first listen to the rockin’ track below.

Circus Recordings’ Selector Part 3 featuring tracks by Lewis Boardman, Ki Creighton, Bimas, Cabarza and R.O.N.N is out December 14.

Premiere: Ipek Gorgun – “Bloodbenders”

ipek_gorgun

Turkish electro-acoustic composer Ipek Gorgun doesn’t limit herself to just one form of artistic expression. In addition to her work as a musician, she’s also a photographer and a published poet. But she really gets around in the music world, having worked with everybody from Otomo Yoshidide to David Brown of Brazzaville. Currently a Ph.D canididate of Sonic Arts at the Istanbul Technical University, Gorgun has been concentrating of late on perfecting her one-woman sonic constructions, and on February 16, some of those efforts will bear fruit with the release of her Aphelion album.

On “Bloodbenders,” the track you’ll find streaming below, you can get a pretty good idea of where Gorgun is coming from. Informed equally by ambient music and avant-garde modernism, her music is occupied more by sonic shadows than by overt statements, but within that mysterious, constantly shifting realm, she somehow manages to say plenty.

Premiere: Aldo Vanucci (feat. Boo) – “All My Life”

jalapenofunkseven

Who would have ever guessed that a Foo Fighters song could get funky? Apparently British beat brainiac Aldo Vanucci did, and he went one step further — he actually made it happen, with the help of a guest vocal turn from his cohort Boo.

Vanucci’s version of the Foo Fighters’ “All My Life” sports a fierce funk groove so slamming that for the first 30 seconds or so before the vocal comes in, you don’t even really care if there’s a vocal or not. And then when Boo makes her entrance the track jumps up to a whole other level of irresistible danceability. And that’s just one of the treats to be found on Jalapeño Records’ new collection, Jalapeno Funk Vol. 7. Out on December 11, it includes Bristol’s Allergies, Parker, Kraak & Smaak, Smoove & Turrell, and many more, each offering up a track more funk-filled than the other.
