Premiere: Unai – “October Star”

Unai

Back in 2006 Swedish artist and producer Erik Möller released A Love Moderne, a seminal album brimming with emotional electronic-fueled songs that won the hearts of fans and critics alike. Instead of striking while the proverbial iron was hot, Möller, who had previously crafted gorgeous dub-house and silky disco tracks in the ’90s for imprints such as Naked Music, Raum Musik and Sub Static, embarked on a personal exploration of self-discovery. Aside from select collaborations, most notably appearing on “Lone Runner” on Kris Menace’s Features album, Möller began dissecting each aspect of his musical life.

During his journey Möller experienced the downfall of his Force Tracks label but eventually found the inspiration that put him in the proper creative space to revisit Unai.

Almost a decade later he’s just unveiled Unai’s brand-new pop-tinged single “Stealing Time.” As the planet soaks in his gem, we’re especially excited  to world premiere “October Star” from Unai’s forthcoming album Human Empire.

“October Star” finds Möller further refining his minimal, synth-charged sensibility, one that’s complimented by delicate, subtle textures and his gifted, often emotionally vulnerable voice.

Second acts don’t come as good as this.

Unai’s Human Empire is released April 13, 2015 via Better Music.

Premiere: Lulacruza – “Comandante”

Lulacruza

Alejandra Ortiz and Luis Maurette of Lulacruza make beautiful music together.

An electronic-folk outfit hailing from Colombia and Argentina currently living in Buenos Aires, they formed in 2005 after meeting at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Their gentle, heartfelt songs are deeply rooted in South American ritual and folklore, one that’s realized by using South American instruments, found sounds and field recordings which they manipulate through the use of electronics.

Veterans who have performed in over 50 cities in five countries (they’ve played notable music festivals such as Lightning in a Bottle, Beloved, Decibel and Chicago World Music Festival), an invitation from SubPop Records founder Bruce Pavitt to record at a state-of-the-art studio on Orcas Island in the Pacific Northwest informed Lulacruza’s upcoming fourth album, Orcas, which is one of their most intimate releases to date.

We’re pleased to world premiere the duo’s “Comandante” from the breathtaking and highly meditative album about love and nature, which was recorded, mixed and mastered by Vance Galloway (Nicolas Jaar).

“The paramo (high wetlands), another place in Colombia, is where ‘Comandante’ comes from,” says Lulacruza’s Alejandra Ortiz. “It talks about the powerful winds that command the clouds bringing the rain. I was walking through the paramo one day when strong winds came, and I could see how crucial they were in bringing the heavy rain clouds. To me, this force of the wind is akin to masculine strength. I feel it’s this elemental force that brought the song.”

Lulacruza’s Orcas is released via Jumpsuit Records on April 14, 2015. Watch their recently released visual album shot in Colombia, Esperando el Tsunami, directed by the renowned French film director here.

Premiere: Desert Dwellers – “The Great Mystery”

Desert-Dwellers-Gratitude

Since the ’90s Amani Friend and Treavor Moontribe of Desert Dwellers have been proponents of an evolving, globally influenced downtempo electronic signature informed by dub, psy-trance, chill out, ambient and beyond. Friend has a lengthy list of music and art credits, including producing six installments of DownTemple Dub for White Swan Records, while Treavor Moontribe is a co-founder of Los Angeles-based Moontribe Collective, a non-commercial outfit who made an indelible mark in West Coast rave culture in the ’90s with their legendary full moon desert gatherings.

Having toured globally — in 2014, Desert Dwellers opened for Twisted Records artist Shpongle during a seven-week U.S. tour and performed at Burning Man, Coachella and festivals in Israel, Portugal and Canada — the musical partners are set to present their eighth album, The Great Mystery, on their Desert Trax label/Black Swan Sounds.

No doubt influenced by their many travels and experiences over the past two decades, the full-length, which features performances by Rick Hunter playing oud, singer Megan Chandler, violinist Hannah Thiem, Ixchel Prisma and Anuradha Genrich as well as engineers including Torin Goodnight (Bird Of Prey), Benjamin Last (Temple Step Project), Yulu Fershtat (Perfect Stranger) and James Lumb (of Electric Skychurch and one-time Big Shot tech editor) brings together the worlds of electronic music and yoga for a captivating result.

We’re thrilled to world premiere the gorgeous title track brimming with multi-cultural references, dynamic percussion and sultry grooves.

Namaste.

Desert Dwellers’ The Great Mystery is released exclusively on Bandcamp on March 20, 2015. The LP received its worldwide release on April 13, 2015.
