Known for his sublime beatscapes, graphic novels and comics, Canadaian turntablist Kid Koala takes his creativity to the next level with his upcoming album, 12 Bit Blues. Now get this: the album’s limited edition first run will come with a cardboard, hand powered turntable kit. Are you reading this, Gizmodo?
Equally as interesting is that Koala (a.k.a Eric San) forged all of the album’s tracks on an old school E-mu SP-1200 sampler, a production unit he fantasized about owning when he was a kid. According to Ninja Tune, “over three days he cut up and reassembled the bed tracks for 12 Bit Blues. No sequencing software was used. Using the pads on the machine and a multitrack, Eric played each part of the tracks in real time, before finally returning and adding cuts over the top.”
So it’s no surprise 12 Bit Blues apparently sounds raw and beautiful. Look for the album dropping on September 18.
The second weekend of Coachella kicked off on Friday, and while things were heating up at the festival in Indio, CA, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke was DJing at a day party not too far away in Palm Springs at The Ace Hotel. In the video below, Yorke seems to be in the zone, throwing down a set of underground tunes while the crowd watches in awe. Yorke’s mixing skills ain’t half bad, either. Check out the clip below.
Electric Daisy Carnival New York has announced the lineup of its event taking place May 18-20, 2012 at MetLife Stadium. The bill includes a variety of world-class DJs including Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Goldie, John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Seth Troxler and Art Department.
Obligatory press gush from Pasquale Rotella, founder and CEO of Insomniac Events: “We felt a buzz coming from East Coast fans and decided that New York, with the right venue, would be the perfect stop for EDC. We’re excited to bring Insomniac’s unique multisensory festival experience to the New York area, a kind of production I have yet to see delivered in this market.”
Obligatory press gush from Eddie Dean, co-owner of Pacha New York who partnered with Insomniac to produce the event: “It was a testament to the strength of our brands, and electronic music in general. New Yorkers are a tough crowd to please, but they could hardly contain their excitement for a chance to experience EDC at home.”

Legendary New York DJ/producer Danny Tenaglia is known for his deep connection with his fans. If you’ve ever seen him play one of his marathon sets, you’ll know that he often gets on the mic — something of a rarity in dance music culture — and addresses his flock a few times throughout the night.
Taking to Facebook yesterday Tenaglia posted a long, heartfelt post asking “please, just LET me BE, LET me BE!… The Time Has Come for ME to “finally” BE MYSELF!!”
“As of this day, I am ‘resigning’ (not retiring) and all future gigs will sadly BE canceled except for My Belated Birthday @ Pacha on Sat April 28th! This will BE my final gig until I feel I am ready to return back to the decks. This is the hardest decision I have ever had to make in my career, but if not now, then when??
Tenaglia went on to discuss the trials and tribulations of his chosen profession — everything from the trappings of success to how difficult it can be when traveling around the world. He wrote: “I HAVE SEEN THE MOUNTAINTOP as a DJ and I just need to STOP and smell the roses of my life and simply try to “Grow Up and BE who I really am” but “everything””
Tenaglia also revealed extremely personal information, stating that part of his break will allow him to move from his New York City loft filled with 10,000 record which he can no longer afford. “I know many people think I am wealthy but I assure I am not! I have lived well and have very nice things to show for my earnings, but I cannot stop working!”
At around 11am today Tenaglia posted again on Facebook that he was amazed by over 1,756 comments to his post. “I will share sooooooooooo much with all of you,” he wrote before eating his breakfast of oatmeal, berries and “a big Fu**ing cup of caffeine!.” “But let me get some fuel in me!”
