Disclosure‘s Howard and Guy Lawrence spoke about the musical ethos behind their upcoming album, Caracal, and why they always believed Sam Smith was destined to be a star, at Capitol Records’ third annual Capitol Congress held August 5, 2015 at the ArcLight Theatre in Hollywood, CA.
Due out September 25 and featuring collaborations with The Weeknd, Miguel and Lorde, Caracal includes slower tempos and is a departure from the house and garage tracks that informed their 2013 debut, Settle.
The Lawrences report their R&B leanings received a warm reception on their recent European tour went down extremely well, and they’re eager to present more songs from their upcoming sophomore effort.
“We’ve been in rehearsals a lot…we did a big test run in Europe and we played some good festivals,” said Howard Lawrence. “It’s looking good. I just can’t wait to put the whole album into the show, you know, because we kinda tested a few songs and once people know them it’s going to be amazing.”

This year’s Bestival was held on a sunny weekend from September 4-7 at Robin Hill Country Park located on Isle of Wight. Rob da Bank’s annual fete was four days of music and mayhem with acts ranging from Outkast and Major Lazer to Foals, Chic and Bonobo.
EDM is taking a foot hold everywhere and the genre made its presence known at Bestival. The usually eclectic UK festival that began in 2004 had been generally been built on electronic music, but this year saw a decline in indie-rock acts on the bill. Interestingly enough, the hippies, crustsies and rock heads who were prominent in recent editions seemed to disappear. Nonetheless, happy smiling faces were in abundance.
The lineup for HARD Summer 2014, taking place August 2 and August 3 at Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in Los Angeles, has been made public. While headliners include many of the usual festival suspects — Diplo and Skrillex’s Jack U, Tiësto, Axwell and Disclosure — the bill is rounded out with sets from techno stalwart Josh Wink, Belgian mashup kings 2manydjs and hotly-tipped newcomer Gorgon City. Did Disclosure fake their live set at Capital FM Summer Ball last weekend? After a photograph of the UK duo’s performance showing the plug for their gear not connected to a power source, some have accused the pair of “pulling a David Guetta” (or faking their set). Disclosure’s Guy Lawrence has vigorously defended himself on Facebook, stating “we didn’t try and make it look like we were mixing. We left the fucking plug on the floor on purpose, didn’t even plug phono leads into the master out, turned all the EQs fully down and the master out AND DIDN’T EVEN TAKE HEADPHONES for god sake!!”
With this accusation Disclosure join Justice and Steve Angello, all of whom have been accused of faking the funk. Meanwhile, Disclosure’s album Settle currently sits atop the UK album charts right now and anyone who knows anything about how pop show operate will know that singers nearly always perform to backing tracks for these types of shows. Lawrence’s full statement is below.
Hello I Love Bass Music and everyone who is talkineang about this photo… so. here is how and why this happened. Capital FM made us do this show with a backing track playing but allowed the vocalists to sing. They said that they had to trigger the tracks themselves to sync visuals. We pleaded with them for weeks and weeks to let us play fully live or at least let us mix but they just weren’t having it. You will also notice this was the same for a lot of the dance acts playing that day (i.e. the duke dumont pic you posted)

Notice also that we didnt try and make it look like we were mixing. LOL if at any point we touched the mixer it was…well, you try standing infront of 80,000 people and not touching the mixer… go on… its really hard hahaha!
I would also like to point out that people like David Guetta ect who have also been accused of pretending to mix, actually try and cover it up and pretend to blend tracks into one another and hide it… but with us, we played three songs with vocalists b2b with gaps in between, so even if we had been mixing, there would have been no beat matching involved anyway + we didnt try and hide it at all!!
But yeah it was a very strange experience and one we will not be going through again. Capital have been amazing to us and they play our songs roughly 400 times a week across their various networks and we wanted to thank them for all the support.
