Big Shot Guest Mix: Flashmob

flashmob

Influenced by classic house music and the clubs which helped spawn a global movement, Italian twosome Flashmob have carefully carved out a discerning niche for themselves on the global dance floor. Since issuing their brilliant floor movers “Brick House” and “Need In Me,” Danny Minchella and Alessandro Magani have continued to champion quality house music.

After various exploits in Ibiza this season, the guys produced an exclusive Big Shot Guest Mix, featuring primo cuts from house-music stalwarts such as Dennis Ferrar, Kerri Chandler and Mood II Swing. Check out their smoking’ mix below and read an exclusive interview where they discuss their success and future aspirations.

We think you’ll agree when we say the ‘Mob rules!

How did Flashmob fare this summer? What were some of your most favorite musical moments?
The whole summer was really great, very intense and with really good vibes. We were really happy to see such a great reaction to our twist of sound. We really enjoyed Sankeys and Defected at Booom in Ibiza, although we must say it’s hard to beat the Lost In Ibiza Boat Party — every year it gets better. We also doid some really great festivals like Found Ceremony and 18h.

It seems that you’ve been traveling a lot lately. How does travel influence your DJ sets and productions?
I think traveling and learning about new cultures opens your mind to new ways of life, new prospectives and in a way it helps you destroy barriers. It makes your brain free and independent; this is very important to find your personal style playing.

Aside from the food, what’s the one thing you miss most about Italy when you’re traveling?
Italy is a such a great country because everywhere you go you’ll find yourself surrounded by art, history and culture; it’s intense and full of beauty. Once you get used to that the emptiness of many places around the world becomes disturbing.

You’re based in Milan. What’s the go-to club at the moment and how was the scene changed since you both started out?
The scene has not changed much through the years, there’s still the same mechanism that rules the game. It’s sad but music culture is filtered by the interests of the leading agents that only book certain names they have exclusivity on; the same old story. But I see things are changing. We are working with a brilliant promoter, Giuseppe Grillo from Amnesia, who is very young but so incredibly talented. He’s definitely changing the scene and the approach to bookings.

Your remix of JP Chronic ft. Thallia’s “It’s Okay” is gorgeous and techy. How did you approach that mix?
We went into the studio the day before going to Ibiza and we knew we were gonna spend a day in our favorite club in the world, DC10. So we did a DC10 remix, and we love it. I think it’s really something if you can say you really feel represented by a track or remix.

What is the remainder of 2014 looking like for Flashmob? Have you started thinking about 2015 projects?
Reminder is: “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.” 2015 will be a brilliant year, we already know, we’ve got so much new music coming and a great enthusiasm.

What inspired your Big Shot Guest Mix?
To be honest we really wanna go to USA. It’s been in the talks for ages now and one of our two managers, Jay, is in New York so we cannot wait to go. Every time there is a mix or interview request coming from our press agents at Emms Publicity we really give it our all. USA, the Mob is coming. Prepare the flash!

Big Shot Guest Mix: Enrico Sangiuliano

Enrico-Sangiuliano

After getting his start a little over a decade ago at illegal raves in Italy, rising DJ/producer Enrico Sangiuliano has been developing his deep techno signature. Over the course of releases for Spain’s Octopus Recordings, Secret Cinema’s Gem Records, Jewel Kid’s Alleanza and Austria’s Driving Forces, he’s come into his own and has a string of releases due out this year.

The emerging techno titan flexes his mixing muscles with a daunting 16-track Big Shot Guest Mix.

Opening with fellow countryman Sam Paganini‘s epic “Satellite Intro,” Sangiuliano builds his session with stand-out tracks by Alex Dolby, Marco Bailey and Petter B feat. John H M.E.E.O.

“The inspiration behind this mix is a club in Gozo, a small island near Malta, called Paradiso,” says Sangiuliano. “The stage is a terrace on the side of a cliff. I played a closing set there two weeks ago, after a full-on techno set by Jewel Kid. With this mix I want to fix some of the most intense moments during that night!”

Dowland below and enjoy.

Enrico Sangiuliano has several releases in the pipeline: “Capricorn” with Matt Sassari is out soon on Driving Forces. His track “Sparrow In My Glass” is released November 24 on GEM. “Aries” with Matt Sassari is released December 15 on Alleanza, who will release “Restlessness” / “Pussy Killer” in 2014.

Big Shot Guest Mix: Josh Butler

Josh-Butler Big Shot Guest Mix

Emerging UK house maestro Josh Butler turned heads when he unleashed “Got A Feeling,” a massive track that featured a crafty remix by Bontan. On September 29 Butler and Bontan’s “We Found A Place” will be made available after advance support from Pete Tong and Annie Mac. Featuring Josh Barry on vocals and released on Chase and Status’ famed MTA imprint, the new jam is primed and ready to storm the charts and dance floors all over the world.

Before the release of his future club classic, Butler forged a Big Shot Guest Mix featuring “We Found A Place” as well as upfront floor movers from Mat.Joe, Hector Couto, Liam Geddes and others.

There’s a nice buzz about “We Found A Place.” How did this fantastic collaboration come about? Was it produced together in the studio or did you swap files over e-mail?
Josh Butler: I have known Bontan for years now. We originally met through a mutual friend and instantly clicked as we both produced music. So this collaboration was basically just us finally getting in the studio and joining our styles together. It was all done in the studio, we only live around 20 minutes from each other.

The song takes a page from deep-house anthems released in the ’90s. While you do have a techier side, how much does music from that era inform and influence your sound?
We wanted to keep this track true to house music’s roots. I love some techier modern sounds, but I think the sound of soulful deep house is timeless. Artists such as Kerri Chandler, Masters at work and Todd Terry, etc. have influence my sound a lot. They are some of the pioneers and originators of this genre, and I want to keep that alive!

Is there a particular label or DJ from that era that inspires you?
It’s hard to just chose one. I love a lot of the stuff from King Street, Nervous Records, Strictly Rhythm and Mad House!

Your work has received attention from the likes of Pete Tong and other industry bigwigs. What’s that like for you?
Honestly, mind-blowing and very rewarding! I’ve listen to Pete’s Radio 1 show since I was a kid.

In October you play MTA’s five-year anniversary party at Warehouse Project. How do you reflect on your association with MTA? What type of set are you likely to play?
MTA have been a huge part of my career so far. They are a great bunch, they really support my vision and I’m so grateful for the opportunity. My set will all depend on the energy in the room at the time. I will always include elements of my sound. Even if I start deep, I will always build the vibe and work with the crowd to find a balance.

What’s your guiltiest musical pleasure?
Probably happy hardcore

Any plans to play the U.S. in the near future?
No plans set in stone but there are talks of a tour sometime next year.

Big Shot Guest Mix: Boom Merchant

boom merchant big shot guest mix

Born in Ireland, raised in Spain and currently living in Glasgow, Scotland, rising DJ/producer Boom Merchant (a.k.a Kyle Thompson) has been carving a niche for himself with his eclectic sets and top-notch productions. In June he released the gorgeous techno opus “Stars” and the chugging house jam “Green Symphony” on Tribal Pulse and has plenty more irons in the fire.

On his 12-track Big Shot Guest Mix, he peppers in choice cuts from Ricardo Tobar, Pe & Ban, Johnny Kaos and Shin Nishimura — it’s a sonic testament to his diverse, ever-expanding sound. He carefully includes his aforementioned tracks along with his “Elelphant’s Graveyard,” an older nugget released by Process Recordings.

“I think my aim when making this mix was to capture a good cross section of all the vibes and flavours that I love and that I like to focus on when I DJ,” the Merchant says of the session. “I want to take people on a journey and throw sounds at them that will scoop them up and take them somewhere. I want to excite them and make them feel good!

“The mix starts off atmospheric and then runs through a series of structured, high energy tracks that jump between tough minimal beats and more layered, harmonic stuff. I’ve included a lot of my own music alongside some of my absolute favourite tracks. I love to combine my own ideas with tracks I’ve found in record stores all over the place or stuff I’ve been sent online. There’s music from all over the world in here; hopefully you’ll enjoy it as much as I have.”

Sit back, relax and crank this bad boy up.
