Producer Stefon “Bionik” Taylor has spent years in the studio, cutting tracks with artists including Ice-T and Far East Movement. Hell, he’s even been in the studio with legendary producers such as George Martin and Peter Mokran. A multi-instrumentalist, he sings, plays guitar, bass, drums and percussion on all of his own sample-free music.

At the start of the summer he released his The Way I Be EP and has brought his live show to festivals including Sonic Bloom and Electric Forest. Although not a DJ, he was kind enough to hit the lab and forge a bottom-heavy Big Shot Guest Mix featuring his own cuts as well as jams by UZ, Bassnectar, N.A.S.A. and more.

I was really excited when Big Shot wanted to feature a mix from me. I am a producer who usually specializes in live, interactive performance of my original bass music (I’m not a DJ), so I took this as an opportunity to showcase what I do in a live situation, alongside some of my favorite producers’ new and classic tracks.

I recorded this mix live in one pass doing additional arrangement and transitions, plus playing live Roland drum pads, dub effects and scratching on a CDJ. I did a few select overdubs afterward, but I tried to keep it live to leave some room for beautiful accidents.

Some of the artists I chose for this mix are a big inspiration to me. UZ, Bleep Bloop Stooki Sound and Buku are some of my favorites who are shaping the Bass Music genre. Not to mention heavyweights like Bassnectar and Yellow Claw, whose influence is incontestable.

As I said, I’m not a DJ. I only play my own music and strive to create unique experiences when I perform live, but having the chance to drop some of my tracks next to these cats and play along was awesome!
