Brooklyn’s Verboten Starting DJ Brunch on May 18

Brunch is serious business these days. While choosing the right spot is usually easy if you do a bit of research, the music you’re bound to hear during your meal will either a Sade album from the ’80s or a schlocky downtempo mix that’ll make you want to gauge your eyes out. On May 18 Brooklyn club Verboten will flip the script on the weekend ritual by offering a Sunday DJ brunch series featuring world-class DJs and big-name local mixers. Starting at 4pm and extending into the evening, the first installment will star deep-house denizens Walker & Royce and Andrew Grant. Food is under the direction of Chef Nick Grosz, and the gourmet menu will be accompanied by an array of cocktails on offer. Brunch just got a whole lot more interesting in New York City. Look for this innovative idea to be copied all over the place.

DJ Skribble Suing Las Vegas’ Chateau Nightclub For $1M

DJ Skribble

Queens, NY DJ/producer DJ Skribble doesn’t believe that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. The venerable commercial DJ, who is famous for his appearances back in the day on MTV’s The Grind and Total Request Live and his stint in Young Black Teenagers in the ’80s before they broke up, is suing Chateau Nightclub in Las Vegas for $1 million. According to TMZ, Skribble asserts that the club’s new management reneged on an existing one-year deal where he was paid $3,500 per show. Skribble says he’s owed $42,000 for canceled gigs and claims the club’s new management did a number of things to undermine him, including ceasing all advertising and promotion and refusing to give him a microphone during his DJ sets. He’s also suing for slander claiming the club’s management told customers he should “be put in the bathroom to play.” You can bet that this won’t be the last we’re hearing about this case.

Report: Family Says DJ Rashad Died of Blood Clot, Not Drugs

DJ Rashad

The Guardian is reporting that famed Chicago juke producer DJ Rashad died of a blood clot in his leg, not an overdose as was widely reported at the time of his demise. According to the paper, Rashad’s cousin informed Hyperdub about the findings after an examination by the Chicago coroner. The reported drug paraphernalia found was apparently marijuana, not hard drugs. Rashad, who died on April 26, had complained of leg pain but didn’t think it was a life-threatening situation.

Almost two years after Simon Cowell’s dream of presenting DJ talent competition DJ Idol ran out of gas after he reportedly clashed with Sony Pictures and partners Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment, Cowell’s Syco Entertainment has announced that the TV show is back on thanks to a strategic partnership with the evil empire emerging concert/entertainment brand SFX. Now called Ultimate DJ, the program will seek out emerging DJs and follow the same formula as American Idol and X-Factor. T-Mobile will be the presenting sponsor.

Obligatory press release gush from Simon Cowell: “We have been developing this concept for a while but our partnership with SFX has been a real game-changer for this format. Obligatory press release gush from Robert Sillerman,Chairman & CEO of SFX Entertainment: “Bringing EMC (electronic music culture) to the world is our goal. And building a TV franchise in the USA is a key part of that strategy. Obligatory press release gush from John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile: “In the same way we’re revolutionizing wireless to empower customers everywhere, we look forward to working with Syco and SFX to showcase and promote a fresh, new generation of DJ/producer talent,” said . “Our customers spend a lot of time listening to music on their devices, so you can expect us to take on entertainment and music in our typical bold and aggressive, Un-carrier style.”

Obligatory press release gush from Kelly Belledegrun, Senior Syco Producer: “This show will represent a visual and musical revolution and we can’t wait to showcase this to the world with our exciting new partners.”
