Video: Did You See Daft Punk’s TV Commercial Last Night During SNL?

Daft-Punk-Columbia

Those watching last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by comedian Kevin Hart were treated to something special in between comedy sketches and musical performances by guest Macklemore and Ryan Lewis: a teaser commercial for Daft Punk‘s upcoming album. The 15-second spot aired only days after the group updated its website to feature one image of its trademark robot helmets with Columbia Records’ logo emblazoned on the bottom right-hand corner.

Daft Punk’s ad featured a disco-style groove and funky guitar line, which many on social media suspect belongs to Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers since he has blogged openly about collaborating with the French duo. No additional information such as a release date were included in those precious seconds. What fans can expect next from Daft Punk is anyone’s guess: A surprise show? Rush release of their new album? Who knows. But whatever the case you’ve got to give them credit for keeping the lead up to their next album extremely exciting and interesting. Have a look at the commercial below.

Daft Punk’s Website Now Has Columbia Records Logo

Daft Punk Columbia

Today Daft Punk reminded us that a picture is still worth a thousand words by updating their website to include one of their trademark robot helmets with Columbia Records’ logo, thus confirming their signing to the label which was leaked in January. The duo — Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter — posted no other additional information about their much-anticpated next album rumored to be due in the Spring. What we do know is that famed Chic producer Nile Rodgers has worked on the as-yet unnamed full-length along with Giorgio Moroder, singer-songwriter Paul Williams, bassist Nathan East and Feist collaborator Chilly Gonzales.

Forget Coachella, Daft Punk Sign with Sony

Daft Punk

As rumors spread last week that Daft Punk were playing Cochella 2013 (they aren’t), the duo — Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter — must’ve been laughing their collective asses of as today it was revealed that the French duo have inked a worldwide deal with Sony. The signing comes after the company added Depeche Mode to its roster and finalized a deal earlier this week with Ultra Records. No word yet on when their fourth album will be released (rumor mill says it will be released in the spring), but what we do know is that famed Chic producer Nile Rodgers has worked on the as-yet unnamed full-length along with Giorgio Moroder, singer-songwriter Paul Williams, bassist Nathan East and Feist collaborator Chilly Gonzales. Daft Punk’s most recent album, recent full-length, Disney’s Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010. Last October they created a mix for Saint Laurent’s fashion show.
