New York house DJ/producer/remixer Joeski’s ascension to the global stage has been incumbent upon one thing: pure freakin’ talent. From playing house parties in Queens, NY,  to spinning at infamous Manhattan nightspots and parties including The Limelight, NASA, Save the Robots and the Roxy, he’s continually evolved his sound both behind the decks and the boards. And not surprisingly his sleek, raw grooves continue to reverberate well beyond the Big Apple.

With 2016 filled with producing and remixing for labels including Defected and Suara, Joeski (a.k.a. Joe Flores) makes a welcome return to Steve Bug’s Poker Flat Recordings with the Lessons in Dub EP.

Where his previous Erotic Sessions EP for Poker Flat was a deep, techy dose of dark insanity (listen to “Come On Here” here), his new three-tracker for the label is swathed in dubby textures, sexy vocal sample banter and groovy goodness.

Colombian DJ/producer Fiona Beeson’s Drift EP will heat up any cold winter dance floor. Big picture: this EP falls somewhere in the deep/tech/house spectrum, but each remix has its own unique flavor and each remixer stays faithful to the original while imbuing it with their own unique personality.

The Original Mix rolls in with dynamic layers and hits the perfect balance between deep boppin’ house beats and melodic grooves. The song’s progressive structure is tied neatly together with a symphonic breakdown and rebuild. Slurm’s remix brings in a heavier kick to support a decidedly tech-driven vibe swirling in atmospheric ambience. Joseki’s vision starts off a bit darker but the subtle percussion and techy riffage really set it apart. Finally, Cesar Caballero’s remix keeps things moving with a humming bassline and energizing leads. It’s the contrast between the highs and lows that make this one work.

Final thoughts? Great EP. If this is any indicator of the future, 2016 will be a big year for Beesound Recordings.

A chance post-DJ set meeting between house masters Harry Romero and Joeski at Winter Music Conference 2014 planted the seed of what has blossomed into a beautiful musical collaboration. Fueled by a mutual desire to shake up dance music’s status quo, their HR & SKI alliance has presented them with plenty of room to innovate on their own terms. With releases out now on esteemed imprints Nervous, Suara, Stereo, Defected and Maya, they’ve only scratched the tip of the artistic iceberg.

This month the twosome drop an extra special release, “Ghetto Jazz,” on DJ Sneak’s trusted I’m A House Gangster. Reminiscent of the jazz-soaked style Pal Joey explored in the early ’90s (remember “Hot Music”?), the duo, who play on two mixers and four decks simultaneously, put their own spin on blending jazz with house music for intoxicating results.

With so many years of experience and their collective fingers on the global pulse of house music, we asked the gents to interview each other about whatever was on their minds. Here’s their unfiltered discussion.
