Detroit Swindle 5 Tracks of the Moment

Detroit Swindle

Here’s something to be happy about amid the nonstop glut of political turmoil: Dutch house duo Detroit Swindle (read their Big Shot interview with Mayer Hawthorne here) and their Heist Recordings label are headlining the imprint’s debut U.S. party at Halcyon nightclub — a killer club which opened last November in San Francisco — on Friday, February 3. The bill also features two stars from Heist’s impressive roster of talent, Nachtbraker and Adesse Versions.

On the eve of the gig at the Bay Area hotspot, we connected with Swindlers Lars Dale and Maarten Smeets and asked them to tell us about five fresh tracks that are currently rocking their world. Here they are listed in no particular order.

Mount Liberation Unlimited  – “Double Dance Lover”
These guys have been on fire lately, and this one for Studio Barnhus is amazing. Great sampling and teasing the whole way through until finally the beat comes back with a bang.

Omar S – “Hit it Bubba”
Quite a funky and happy track for Omar S’ standards and it’s lovely. Amazing what this guy can do with some rough drums and a simple funk sample. Bonus points for the silly vocal snippet saying, “I want my daddy’s records.”

Cotonete – “Inside Outside” (Phil Asher’s Restless Soul Fun Band Mix)
Amazing funk track, reworked by the ever cool Phil Asher into a jazzy house/broken beat tune with a great slap bass running throughout the track.

Young Wolf – “Kabuki” (Ritual Version)
Young Marco and Wolf Müller slept together and created this afro-electronic baby. It’s deliciously intoxicating, with a really cool mouth harp stealing the show.

Ilvams – “What About Love” (Rob Manga Edit)
Sleazy disco rework by one of Amsterdam’s finest. Funky as can be.
