Former Soul II Soul vocalist Melissa Bell has died at the age of 53, according to a post shared by her daughter Alexandra Burke on Twitter and Instagram.
“It is with the heaviest and saddest of hearts that the family inform you that our beautiful, funny and loving mum, Melissa Bell has passed away.
“Our beautiful mother gained her wings on Monday 28th August 2017, a day that has changed our lives forever. We will never forget her unconditional love, support, charisma, strength and courage throughout her life. We are eternally proud & thankful to call her our mummy.”
Bell had struggled with health problems for a number of years, and suffered from kidney failure in 2008.
She joined Soul II Soul in 1993, recording and touring with the band until 1995. She continued her solo career after the leaving the group, and in 1999, fronted a new band called Soul Explosion.
After Alexandra won The X Factor in 2008, Bell published her book Heart and Soul: The Emotional Autobiography of Melissa Bell, Alexandra Burke’s Mother.
Our thoughts and love are with Melissa’s family and friends at this time.
