Pete Tong’s New Underground Las Vegas Party Isn’t Very Underground

Anyone who knows anything about Las Vegas’ club scene will tell you that DJs are getting paid ridiculously high fees to play for audiences who probably care more about bottle service than music. Though he’s had his fair share of exploits in Sin City over the years, famed BBC Radio 1 DJ/serial entrepreneur/MBE Pete Tong returns to Las Vegas next month with his monthly All Gone Pete Tong party at LiFE Nightclub at SLS Las Vegas to be held at the venue’s Underground Sundays night.

Instead of booking the usual EDM suspects, Tong’s soiree will feature more “underground” talent such as Eric Prydz’s techno alias Cirez D (October 5), Seth Troxler (October 26) and Sasha (November 23).

According to a missive, production and design will be handled by Romain Pissenem from Ibiza’s iconic Ushuaia club, who also art directed Luciano’s Vagabundos events. Pissenem will be creating “a bespoke environment at LiFE, tailor-made to explore the edgier reaches of dance music.”

Obligatory press release gush from Tong: “LiFE allows underground dance music to flourish. It’s five years since Vegas caught the dance bug, the scene has grown and matured, it feels at a point where people are ready for something different. I’m looking to build a community and vibe that’s a little sexier and darker, not quite so polished.”

Will die-hard “underground” dance-music fans in Las Vegas gamble on Tong’s party and book one of LiFE Nightclub’s 70 VIP tables? I think we know the answer to that question.

Veteran BBC Radio 1 DJ/A&R Pete Tong has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for services to Broadcasting and Music in the New Year’s Honours List 2014.

Tong, 53, who relocated to Los Angeles this year, said in a statement, “It’s great to receive this honour for being a DJ. I’m proud that it acknowledges a profession that I care about a great deal, and one that’s made a huge impact around the world. I’d like to thank BBC Radio 1 for its unerring commitment to dance and electronic music and for supporting and encouraging me for over two decades. I’d like to thank all the club promoters in the UK and around the world for their passion and commitment to putting on amazing events and the artists producers and DJs that have been making and innovating with the music. This wouldn’t have happened without so many great tunes. Finally, to my family and team who have supported me on this journey in so many ways – thank you.”

A bevy of DJs have taken to Twitter, showing their appreciation for Tong’s award and support for dance music over his lengthy reign.

Clear Channel Launches Evolution 93.5 Miami with Pete Tong in the Mix

Amid Miami’s preparation for Ultra Music Festival/Winter Music Conference/Miami Music Week an interesting event happened yesterday: new dance-music radio station Evolution 93.5 Miami went on the air. Charged with the task of playing dance music 24/7, the station features a playlist featuring tracks by the likes of Skrillex, David Guetta and all the usual suspects. BBC Radio 1 DJ Peter Tong has been named the station’s ambassador DJ, and he will be at the helm two parties with guests on March 16 and 22 at The Surfcomber Hotel to mark the station’s birth.

Beginning March 25, Evolution 93.5 Miami will air his a four-hour long daily show All Gone Pete Tong featuring Pete’s Essential New Tune of the Week, as well as the hottest tracks from the global Top 100 chart on Beatport.
