Big Shot Guest Mix 325: Purveyors of Fine Funk

Dan Curtin

What a year it’s been for our Big Shot Guest Mix series. Over the past 12 months, we’ve brought you exclusive sessions from masters including Chicago house visionary Tevo Howard, Oliver Way of Detroit Grand Pubahs, and a post-everything voyage navigated by Parisian From Karaoke to Stardom.

We couldn’t close out 2016 in a better way than this session helmed by Purveyors of Fine Funk, which is the recently rebooted ’90s house alter ego of techno don and Metamorphic Recordings boss Dan Curtin.

Over the course of 15 funky-ass, deep-house tracks, Curtin lays fiery down cuts by Louie Vega & Jocelyn Brown, DJ Sneak, DJ Gomi and Paul Johnson. He also includes the stomping title track from POFF’s Soul Message EP on now Metamorphic.

“This is the house sound of Purveyors,” describes Curtin, “a little bit soul, little bit future, little bit jack, little bit dirty. This mix digs deep into those feelings, basically just keeping things real.” Enjoy!

Dan Curtin Reboots Purveyors of Fine Funk ’90s Alias

Dan Curtin

Known for many memorable exploits in techno, Metamorphic Recordings boss Dan Curtin is revisiting his roots in house music by rekindling his Purveyors of Fine Funk nom de plume. Curtin, who was involved in the Midwest rave scene in the ’90s and currently lives in Berlin, launched the POFF alias during that halcyon era, releasing vinyl-only EPs on Peacefrog and an a full-length album on Nepenta in 2001. “Purveyors of Fine Funk is my house alter ego, sometimes it’s a collaboration, sometimes not, but it’s always about that funk, house with an edge and intense soul, definitely jacking, sometimes acid and always looking to the future,” says Curtin, “but now it’s time for Purveyors to finally hit the decks and bring this signature house sound to the club as a DJ set.”

In addition to gigs Curtin will release POFF’s Soul Message EP on December 12 via Metamorphic. According to a missive, the four-track EP finds him channeling tough Chicago grooves. Until then, have a listen to Curtin’s old-school jam “Summer Funk” that could still set any dance floor ablaze.
