A year before its 25th anniversary Vanessa Dao’s much heralded debut solo album, Zipless, will finally be issued on vinyl via Daou’s DRKR Records imprint in association with KID Recordings. The ten-track downtempo full-length was originally released in 1994 on Krasnow Entertainment/MCA.
Zipless: Songs from the Works of Erica Jong took its name from Erica Jong’s 1973 best-selling novel Fear of Flying. Vanessa was married to Jong’s nephew, Peter Daou, for 12 years. In the early ’90s, they helmed dance group The Daou and worked together until they divorced.
The full-length traipsed around the outskirts of house music, blending elements of acid jazz and spoken word on sultry tracks like “Sunday Afternoons” and “Near the Black Forest.”
Jong welcomed the news of Zipless‘s release on vinyl. “Releasing Zipless on vinyl is like releasing imagination to a whole new generation. We always presume that technology must be the latest in innovation, but sometimes we are fortunate to be re-introduced to familiar, and still relevant, forms of entertainment that might have been sidelined along the way.”
Pre-orders of the remastered, limited- edition 180gm black vinyl LP can be made here.
I’ve always loved this album. It was a big seller at Tower Records in NYC.
