Tragic news to report. San Francisco house and techno DJ/activist/promoter Bubbles (a.k.a. Anthony Torres) was killed this morning outside the New Century strip club on Larkin and Myrtle streets.

The news was confirmed by Bubbles’ attorney Jim Reilly who told the SF Examiner: “This is a hate crime. The details are still coming out… For a transgender activist to be gunned down on [his] own street shouldn’t stand and won’t stand.”

Police have yet to release suspect information.

Torres came up with the idea for his androgynous counterpart 16 years ago – not long after moving to San Francisco from Phoenix.

In a 2012 interview with SF Gate, he said, “In San Francisco you can get away with doing this. It’s an escape from every mundane day, and San Francisco allows me to do that. Bubbles is like a toy, in a way.”

More on this story as it develops.
