We all need to hit the pause button, take a breath and reflect on how we got here from there. DJ Sun did exactly that when he embarked on an ancestral quest with photographer Jasmine Lee Richardson to trace the journey of his Chinese ancestor, Soon Sam Sin, who departed in 1858 from the South of China via Macau to Suriname, South America as an indentured servant. The project commissioned in 2015 by Asia Society Texas Center came to be known as an audio-visual performance by DJ Sun and Richardson’s company, Everyday is Sunday. Qingxi, the accompanying 50-minute soundtrack, will be released on March 25, 2016. We’re pleased to world premiere the glorious downtempo track “Macau,” which finds DJ Sun paying homage to the past by using the musical tools of the present.
Sun has always been one of my favorites.
