A new legion of French young dance-music producers are carving out their own terrain on the dance floor in a big way. This month alone this very publication has covered two French up-and-comers, Klingande and BeatauCue, and now we’re pleased to tell you about a third: Kulkid.
After cutting a big remix for Foals’ “Out of the Woods” and an acclaimed bootleg of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going,” the emerging house star steps out with his debut two-track EP, Forgot About Kul/I Need U (download it for free here), a pair of emotional house tracks that hints at bigger things to come.
We asked the one-named phenom to share his five favorite artists of the moment on SoundCloud, and he happily complied.
1. Chet Faker – “1998”
Loving that guy’s vibe; I have his album on repeat. His tune “Drop The Game” with Flume is so good too. I dig everything Future Classic releases; they’ve really got an original and fresh signature sound.
2. London Grammar – “Sights” (Tourist Remix)
This is everything I love: ambient intro, big drop, soft and dancing at the same time. Tourist is going to smash 2014 with his upcoming release on Method Music. I’m 200 percent sure.
3. Disclosure x Friend Within – “The Mechanism”
Their grimey bass is a monster. I’m happy they released this now. I got a tune with a pretty similar bass synthesis, and I’m glad big heads like them show people this way.
4. Chrome Sparks – “Goddess”
I like to believe this is the kind of sound guys like Pink Floyd or Wendy Carlos would have done if they were producing electronic music. This progression is just breathtaking.
5. Kulkid – “Forgot About Kul” (Free Download)
Not that I’m a fan of myself, but everyone out there should be listening to this while chilling with friends around a pool on a lazy afternoon. Or at dawn.
