Detroit Techno Legend Robert Hood to Release Career-Spanning Compilation

Robert-35 by Marie Staggat

Robert Hood will be releasing M-Print: 20 Years of M-Plant, a three-disc compilation spanning his two decades behind the M-Plant label. With M-Plant, Hood has revolutionized and helped reinvent Detroit techno, and this compilation is set to be the definitive summation of his evolution through the imprint. M-Print spans Hood’s various incarnations including his work under his Monobox and Floorplan monikers, and will feature classic M-Plant releases, re-edits and previously unreleased tracks.

Disc one explores Hood’s early years on the label during his minimal period, in a set that features favorites like “Minimal Nation,” “Moveable Parts 1 & 2,” “Internal Empire” and “The Protein Valve.” Disc two focuses on M-Plant tracks of the past five years where his Floorplan alias re-emerged in a new form that pulled in his funk, disco and soul influences, while keeping his techno roots in check. Disc three will feature a mixture of both new and unreleased tracks as well as a selection of remixes, pulling together M-Plant’s past and future.

M-Plant is more than a compilation,” says Hood of the release. “I wanted it to flow like a river of living water instead of just a flashback. It represents the unfolding of a dream. It represents passion and determination to make something out of nothing. It’s like planting a seed in the ground and watching it grow over time into a beautiful tree.”

Kölsch to Release DJ Mix for Balance

kolsch

After issuing Danny Tenaglia’s Balance 025, the venerable Balance label will close out 2014 with an eclectic mix by Copenhagen’s Rune Reilly Kölsch.

Whether making funky house as Rune, or cutting anonymous techno 12-inches for Tattoorecs, Kölsch is constantly surprising and always an entertaining. His upcoming session for Balance surmises his vast pedigree into a neat little package, mixing artists as disparate as Dhumen and Radiohead.

Continuing his interest in vocal-based electronic music, the mix album is a colorful array of favorites from all over the map.

In addition to featuring tracks by Pional, Danny Daze, Karl Friedrich and Caribou, the mix will also feature a few exclusive cuts by Kölsch himself, the new track “Punchbuggy,” and a remix of Coldplay’s “Sky Full of Stars.”

“I’ve incorporated some of my favorite records of all time in this mix, and I’m so proud that we have been able to get all these beautiful pieces of music on to one disc,” says Kölsch. “It took me a while to find the perfect tracks for the mix, as I was looking for the perfect balance of very musical records with vocals, and the more energetic tracks. I’m very happy with the outcome. I tested out the mix a few times, and for me the best way to listen to it is while traveling. In the plane or car, it really makes sense.”

Balance presents Kölsch will be released December 9.

Watch: New Video by DJ Cam Side Project, Bentley Bass Music

bentley bass music

DJ Cam has often been tagged as the French DJ Shadow, being a career-long miner of old jazz records, hip-hop beats and long-forgotten sounds. It’s been 20 years since Cam’s debut Underground Vibes, and he continues to go strong with his latest venture, Bentley Bass Music. Described as fat hip-hop beats plus heavy bass and animal noises, Bentley Bass Music is a project that gobbles up the nuances of hip-hop and spits them out in new and exciting ways, as can be heard the project’s first record, Everglades.

Recorded around the world and mixed in Cam’s new home in Miami, the album is comprised of tight grooves executed on analog keyboards, MPC and turntables, set to animal noises and ambiance recorded in parts of Africa, Asia, and of course, the Everglades. While described as “the perfect soundtrack for your Bentley driving experience,” it’s a record that likely would sound pretty cool coming from whatever your ride might be, especially if driving slow down a down a dark alleyway.

Check out this video for album highlight “Scarface” (if you’re not the squeamish type). It’s a fairly gruesome montage of the animal kingdom food chain, and it’s the kind of clip that might make you go back to vegetarianism for a while (there’s also a few key shots from the 1983 classic Scarface, either thrown in simply for the namesake, or to perhaps draw a parallel to the meat industry’s ruthless ways à la Tony Montana).

Everglades is out now on Cam’s own Inflamable Records.

Film Director John Carpenter to Release Electronic Album in 2015

john carpenter album

John Carpenter was always been a triple threat. In addition to being a master film director/writer in the field of horror and suspense, he has also been behind many of the original scores to his films, most notably the iconic themes to Halloween and Escape From New York.

Despite his musical skills, Carpenter has always geared his compositions strictly for film — that is until now. Early next year, Carpenter will release his first non-soundtrack album, appropriately titled Lost Themes.

Lost Themes was all about having fun,” Carpenter says. “It can be both great and bad to score over images, which is what I’m used to. Here there were no pressures. No actors asking me what they’re supposed to do. No crew waiting. No cutting room to go to. No release pending. It’s just fun.”

That freeing method is evident on the first released track from the record, “Vortex,” which sounds like the theme to an early ’80 neo-noir thriller that never existed. But whereas his soundtrack work usually abbreviates itself to whatever the visual sequence calls for, “Voretex” unfolds in a way the Carpenter has never been able to explore before.

In addition to Carpenter’s own layered synths, pianos, and beats, the album also features collaborations with his son Cody (who is a member of the band Ludrium) and fellow composer Daniel Davies (I, Frankenstein). No word has been released yet if Carpenter plans to tour the record (but if so, that’d be pretty amazing).

Lost Themes will be out February 15, 2015 on Sacred Bones. Listen to “Vortex” below.
