Possessing a discography of tracks and remixes released by notable techno labels including Synewave, Perc Trax, Stroboscopic Artefacts and Blank Code, Brooklyn-based producer Greg Schappert makes a bold artistic statement via his Donor alias’ brilliant debut album, Against All. Recently issued on Sean Sander’s Chicago-based Prosthetic Pressings, Schappert’s full-length is a heady, experimental exploration of sounds ranging from the simmering brood of “IP Test” to the chugging, brutal beats of “Station A14.” Since Schappert is working mightily to push his sound to the next level in his own way, we asked him to share five tracks which get his stamp of approval.
Donor’s Against All is out now on Prosthetic Pressings.
1. HTRK – “Body Lotion” (Sleeperhold Publications)
An absolutely beautiful track from one of my favorite bands at the moment.
2. Ben Frost – “No Sorrowing” (Kangding Ray Remix) (Mute)
I love the album and this remix EP consisting of some of my favorite artists at the moment, one of my favorite being Kangding Ray. Just can’t go wrong here.
3. Psychic TV – “Alien Be In” (Silent Servant Remix) (Dark Entries)
Silent Servant has been a key player in the techno scene for years now, and he selects his remix projects carefully. This one in particular is unlikely to leave my playlist anytime soon.
4. John Carpenter – “Night” (Sacred Bones)
John Carpenter’s ’80s horror film scores had a massive influence on me even before I knew anything about electronic music. This is a track off his forthcoming and highly anticipated album due out now. I can’t wait to get my copy.
5. Truss – “Brockweir” (Perc Trax)
I have had very few opportunities to actually play this track out but I’m sure that, when appropriate, this will destroy just about any dance floor I’m lucky enough to play it on. Truss is a good friend and a huge influence.
