2017 Rewind: Phil Cooper

Phil Cooper NuNorthern Soul

How was 2017 for you?
Phil Cooper: Incredibly productive and lots of fun! The label, NuNorthern Soul, released more great material from Japanese jazz legend Ryo Kawasaki and new stuff from Private Agenda amongst others, label boss, I landed a monthly show on WorldwideFM, and I got out a bit to DJ at various festivals and clubs across Australia, Asia and Europe.

Highlights?
Being invited to play at Horse Meat Disco, signing amazing music from the likes of Ilija Rudman, Jose Manuel and commissioning mixes from legends such as Ron Trent, Ron Basejam, Faze Action. Continuing to travel around Asia and dig for the black wax in various dusty basements and continue to meet wonderful, exciting music loving freaks. Oh, and my NuNorthern Soul monthly podcast passing its 100th edition!

Lowlights?
Brexit, US Presidential election, and bad humans doing bad things to good humans in the name of politics and religion.

Song of the year?
So much amazing music, but for just bringing so much joy when this is played I go for The James L’Estrange Orchestra’s “Closer.” It’s a positive piece of music.

What’s your New Year’s resolution?
Try to be a better human, continue to put out more positive music, more travel and to meet more good humans who are music freaks. Love saves the day!
