Hypocrite of 2012: Deadmau5 Announces Return to Ultra Music Festival After Dissing It in Video Rant

deadmau5

Joel “deadmau5” Zimmerman announced today on Twitter that he was returning to Ultra Music Festival. “Well, I caved in… There was just too many of you guys asking me to play at ultra this year, so im doin it for you guys! 😉 viva la horde.”

Deadmau5’s announcement comes almost a year to since he posted a 12-minute video lashing out at Ultra Music Festival, bemoaning the competition among talent for time slots and stage production, chastizing the event’s organizers for their lack of organization skills and demanding that DJs on the bill play exclusively for them while in Miami.

“Ultra to me is the definition of insanity,” declared Deadmau5 in the video rant posted in January. “It’s doing the same fucking thing, expecting different results every time…$595 fucking dollars for a ticket? Wow, someone’s laughing to the bank.”

“I hate these fucking festival things you know…it’s a bit much. I would rather pay $100 or $50 to see my favorite act instead of doshing out $600 to see all these fucking people, most of which are playing at the same fucking time.”

Though Deadmau5 said Ultra Music Festival “is fucking awesome,” he saw it as a “pissing contest between dudes that have played all over the fucking world.”

In unrelated news, deadmau5 got engaged this week to Kat Von D. Mazel tov.

Deadmau5 Proposes to Kat Von D on Twitter (She Accepted)

deadmau5

Back in November DJ/producer deadmau5 announced on Twitter that he had broken up with his girlfriend Kat Von D after a two-month relationship. “Going to spend a little while screwing my head back on,” deadmau5 tweeted. “I guess I’m not cut out for relationships right now. And…it happened too fast, I lost my balance and fell into a familiar dark place. That place that I’m having difficulty with.” She deserves someone stronger,” he added. “That’s it for the personal stuff…on with our regularly scheduled deadmau5 crap.”

On Saturday things had apparently changed between the couple when Deadmau5 took to Twitter and tweeted:

Deadmau5 proposal Kat Von D

Von D accepted and tweeted:

kat

Deadmau5 tweeted:

deadmau5 shit

The couple have yet to tweet announce their wedding plans, but one can assume we’ll be hearing a lot about them (as well details about their relationship once they tie the knot).

Deadmau5 Announces Breakup with Kat Von D on Twitter

Whether he’s slagging off Ultra Music Festival or railing against pop collaborations, deadmau5 enjoys using social media as a tool to let his fans know what’s going on in his life. This weekend deadmau5 took to twitter, announcing that his relationship with celebrity tattoo artist Kat Von D was over like Mitt Romney’s political aspirations. It seems that a love of ink just couldn’t hold their relationship together. “Going to spend a little while screwing my head back on,” deadmau5 tweeted. “I guess I’m not cut out for relationships right now. And…it happened too fast, I lost my balance and fell into a familiar dark place. That place that I’m having difficulty with.

“She deserves someone stronger,” he added. “That’s it for the personal stuff…on with our regularly scheduled deadmau5 crap.”

Naturally Von D — who has broken out Smiths records to soothe her soul during this difficult time — was quick to fire off her thoughts about the breakup. “Man, I sure was wrong. But at least he made it a no-brainer to break that off. #lessonlearned,” tweeted Von D. “Now, we can get all of the ‘I told you so’s’ outta the way…And move on. Clarification: Deadmau5 and I are no longer together.”

A moment of silence, please, for what was and will now never be.

Editorial: Global Spin Awards Honors Hip-Hop DJs, Pays Only Lip Service to EDM

Last week it was announced that Global Spin Awards, a new ceremony honoring DJs, will take place on November 19 in New York City. Reads a blurb on GSA’s website: “Actors have the Academy Awards…Recording Artists have the Grammy’s…And Now…DJ’s have the GSA’s!!”

Good idea, we initially thought.

GSA is the brainchild of Shawn Prez, an employee at Bad Boy Records. He told to the New York Post that “GSA is not about the hip-hop community. It’s about the DJ and their music. Award shows like these would help get awareness to what influence DJs have on social culture.”

However, looking at the list of nominees, I’m not so sure I agree with Prez’s statement not being only “about the hip-hop community” — a scan of GSA’s list of nominees clearly gives dance music DJs gets short shrift.

Out 200 nominations in 42 categories, only a handful of the DJs affiliated with electronic music are in the mix. Some of the nominations seem entirely random, such as nominating Daft Punk for Dance DJ of the Year. Aside from creating a mix for Saint Laurent’s show during Paris Fashion Week last week, the reclusive French duo rarely DJ and haven’t toured in ages.

While every publication (including BS) is guilty of typos, there are several on the list of nominations — specifically the spelling of dance music DJs Paul Van Dyk, Armin van Buuren and deadmau5 — on GSA’s site. My guess is that they are likely the result of the organization’s unfamiliarity with EDM (we’ll table our issues with the list of nominees for another day):

While Global Spin Awards promise musical diversity it’s also interesting to note that only hip-hop DJs — Funkmaster Flex, Kid Capri, Sway Calloway, Clinton Sparks and legendary DJ/producer Marley Marl — were present at the kickoff press conference. Big Shot didn’t receive an invitation to cover the press conference, and judging by the dearth of coverage on EDM sites we’re going to assume invites weren’t extended much beyond hip-hop press.

Honoring DJs is unquestionably commendable, but saying you’re paying homage to all DJs is quite another.

In the future, let’s hope the organizers cast as wide a musical net as possible and solicit help when paying tribute to DJs beyond their own personal comfort zone. After all, we all get by with a little help from our friends.
