How was 2017 for you?
Cornelius SA: 2017 has been kind of a good year, with lots of ups and downs and setbacks. Anyway, that’s what keeps me going. Played some incredibles South African clubs such as Kitcheners in Jo’burg, ERA Cape Town, and opening the Red Bull Studio Live at OppiKoppi Festival, where I had the best time of my life. I also worked on a lot of new material that I plan to put out in the coming year — collaborations with Jackie Queens & Dwson — and confirmed a remix from Kunzima Theology. Thanks to everyone out there who’s been supporting my music.
Highlights?
I got to work on a remix for the New York-based soulful house band Tortured Soul titled “You Live 2 Far,” did another remix for MDW & Raul Soto also from New York on tracked called “Freedom House” supported by legendary “Todd Terry” and four-time Grammy-nominated producer/DJ Kenny Dope. Then there was other sterling remixes I did for my friends here in South Africa — the one by “Ole” titled “Forever” released under DeepTone Recordings. A follow-up solo EP released with Kenny Dope on his record label Dopewax Records, which was received well widely by deep house music enthusiasts, and lastly a feature on South Africa’s Stay True Sounds Vol.2 , which was selected by label owners JULLiAN Gomes & Kid Fonque.
Lowlights?
Not getting as much bookings as the music you put out. It’s the most stressful part of being a producer. Life goes on anyway! People will get used to the sound you make and want see you play it out of the studio.
Song of the year?
I’ll go with Souldeep’s “Untitled.” It’s too short, nice and simple … one of the songs I can listen to over and over again. These guys really put a great ending to 2017.
What’s your New Year’s resolution?
To continue doing what I’ve been doing — nothing changes. So basically there’s no resolution. I continue moving forward, working hard, having lots of fun on the go, meeting new people, sharing ideas, putting out as much music as I can, and work on collabos and remixing new material. Whatever the future holds, I’m ready.
