2017 Rewind: Adult Karate

AdultKarate

How was 2017 for you?
Adult Karate: 2017 was my first full year of doing music full-time, which has been extremely rewarding and extremely challenging at the same time. But all in all I’m very pleased with my progress. I’m finishing up my first full-length release for Plug Research at the moment, which is sounding pretty big. Hope to have it out by spring 2018.

Highlights?
My second EP Indoors was released in March and it was pretty well-received. I had some amazing live shows in 2017. My hometown (Los Angeles) shows get bigger and bigger each time and I got to do a little mini-tour to the east coast (New York and Philadelphia) in June. In addition, I collaborated with the amazing Amp Live on single called “Traces” that was released in June and also sang the hook on a track for Amp Live and Del The Funky Homosapien, which should be released in April. And on top of all that, I got married!

Lowlights?
I feel like the current political climate in the US has become quite toxic. Basic human rights seem to be going in reverse. Minority groups are being marginalized. People with hate in their hearts are finding protection in large numbers. It’s hard not to become apathetic to it all because it seems like each new day brings more bad news. But I’m confident that I’ll be on the right side of history when it’s all said it done.

Song of the year?
Can I do a three way tie? LCD Soundsystem’s “How Do You Sleep?”; Julia Jacklin’s “Eastwick”; and Kendrick Lama’s “FEEL.”

What’s your New Year’s resolution?
I want to take my live shows to the next level. I’m in the process of integrating a live drummer into the mix to make a more explosive and engaging experience for the audience. I also hope to keep growing as a songwriter. Oh, and I should probably eat better. Fast food drenched in ranch at 2am tastes so good, but I think it might be killing my soul. [Laughs.]
