When San Francisco gay club Beatbox closed its doors in July after a five-year run, the space was scooped up by Bay Area scenester Gina Milano, formerly of Bambuddha Lounge fame and former owner of Le Club. Milano has transformed the room at 314 11th Street near Folsom into Halycon, which opened in early November and has no relation to the same-named record store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Milano has eschewed the soft opening concept and has hit the ground running, booking world-class DJs such as Dave Seaman, Madmotormiquel, Fritz Kalkbrenner, Dubfire and Joseph Capriati. In the coming weeks Halcyon will host a litany of big-name jocks including Jan Blomqvist, DJ Sneak, Sharam, Yousef, and more. Milano has also booked a three-date residency with Svan Väth’s wildly popular Ibiza club night Cocoon, and in 2017 Halcyon will also hold the USA’s first Heist Recordings showcase featuring Detroit Swindle, Nachtbraker and Adesse Versions.
While Obscura Digital have been brought in to design and operate cryo, pyro and confetti cannons, sound is also an integral part of Halycon’s experience.
“We are Pioneer Pro Audio’s flagship in San Francisco Bay Area,” says Milano. “Renowned sound engineers Andy Kayll and Rich Walsh have crafted the aural experience, as they did at the legendary DC10 in Ibiza. Our visuals team have fused the latest technology into bespoke light shows, utilizing cutting edge tools including a six laser projection mapping system, pixel control super flat on the original industrial beams and moving light capabilities. Every show will be different, tailored to each individual act.”
