How was 2018 for you?
Husky: Honestly, it’s been a roller coaster with more downs that ups. Personally a lot of things going on at home meant there was less focus on music and touring as we navigated personal loss and very large family decisions. I had to sit out ADE this year also so that made me feel a little more detached from the scene and people I have been working with. However, I did sign up to a new agency (Onehit agency) for my bookings in Australia and Asia though, and I feel that is moving in a really positive direction.
Highlights?
Playing a few shows with David Penn in Brisbane and Sydney was really fun earlier this year. I also managed to collab on some really cool music with people like Shyam P, Redline, Nat Conway, Letta and Arcade 82 and also had some releases with new labels like Lupe Fuentes’ label, In The Loop (which was then signed to Ministry Of Sound’s Sessions Rebirth compilation), Sam Divine’s Dvine Sounds and Angelo Ferreri’s MONOSIDE.
Lowlights?
On December 1st 2017 my partner Marina and I had a stillborn named Rey, so we have had a really rough year processing Rey’s loss and also trying our best to be positive for our new pregnancy.
Song of the year?
I think as a house DJ that’s always had a firm grasp on disco and soulful music, it’s incredible to see the rise in song-based music. It felt like a few years ago ‘soulful’ was a bad word and you certainly couldn’t play a vocal song for too long on a dance floor. With that in mind, Defected and their labels have had an incredible year, and I can’t stop playing The Shapeshifters “Try My Love (On For Size)” on Glitterbox.
What’s your New Year’s resolution?
Well, our baby is overdue by two days now and we’re expecting it any day, so tbh I haven’t thought much past the end of this week! I think i’d just love to have a positive start the year with plenty of family time, learning to bond with my new baby whilst trying to juggle my career, my two labels (Bobbin Head Music and Random Soul Recordings) and new music. Oh, and moving into our new house which is due for completion at the end of December 2018… EEEK!
