Russian-born DJ/producer DJ Vadim is one of the godfathers of beat culture. He’s been deep in the mix since the ’90s, breaking ground from Berlin and London and pushing electronic music, hip-hop and every musical style with a beat to the next level. This month Vadim released his brand new album, The Dubcatcher. On his 11th album, Vadim tapped a lengthy list of roots and reggae artists for a sunny record that’s perfect for nonstop summertime consumption. We asked Vadim to share five artists on SoundCloud who are rocking his diverse musical world.
1. Kaytranada
Can’t give the guy more props. Too many idiots get hype and gassed up with nothing to back it up, but this guy — wow — is killing the remixes. If you make Janet Jackson or Jill Scott or Common sound better than the original, then you’re very much on the right track. No wonder he is supposedly producing the next Alicia Keys album.
2. Scotch Bonnet Records
Mungo’s Hi Fi and their label, Scotch Bonnet, have literally been killing it for the last couple years. Too many great tunes.
3. Tradesman
Tradesman on the production tip. I’m playing quite a few of his riddims.
4. Flako
One of the most underrated producers out there. We need much more Flako and less David Guetta.
5. Gilles Peterson
It’s World Cup time and who else is Mr. Brazil? Gilles, for years. His radio show is brilliant.
