Glaswegian singer Kali Phoenix poured her heart and soul out on Voices, an album she recently issued with influential Bristol producer Hundred Strong (a.k.a. Ben Dubuisson) behind the mixing board. It’s a heartfelt release informed by the end of a relationship, but it’s not all doom and gloom. As our Gavin Brown noted in his rave review of the full-length, “Kali Phoenix’s voice is the perfect example of the healing power of music and establishes her out as a talent for the future.”
The duo take the controls of Big Shot Guest Mix 320, a 19-track session of jams by Gil Scott-Heron, Alice Clark, Margo Thunder, Johnny Osbourne and Erykah Badu culled from their respective seven-inch collections. “Me and Kali delved into our collection of 45s and put together this mix as an indication of our influences when writing the LP Voices,” explains Dubuisson. “The last track, ‘Washington,’ is from the LP itself and will be out on early winter 2016 on 45. The mix ranges from old soul through reggae and then more uptempo boogie stuff. All these tracks mean something to me and Kali, be it through the songs themselves, the production or just the overall feel.”
