In January we premiered Chicago house visionary Tevo Howard’s Here And Now Film Collection, a captivating 45-minute mini documentary offering behind-the-scenes insight into the DJ/producer’s global travels and fly-on-the-wall conversations with the staff at Gramaphone Records in Chitown and producer peer Fred Peterkin. It’s fitting that we begin the second half of 2016 with a spectacular Big Shot Guest Mix from the Windy City pioneer. Instead of crafting a session brimming with upfront tracks, Howard, who helms Beautiful Granville Records and Tevo Howard Recordings, revisits the ’90s and presents a musical glimpse of what a Chicago DJ mix would’ve sounded like back in the day. Howard drops classics by Inner City, Black Box and Steve Hurley, with our favorite being D:Ream‘s rousing “U R the Best Thing” (Def Klub Mix) revamped by David Morales.
“The ’90s Popular House Mix sessions consist of roughly five DJ set takes of 1990s house music selected in a mix that one might hear on Chicago streets from vehicles on a Saturday night,” Howard explains. “Alongside the recent trend embracing ’90s culture and house music, these sessions give an insight into ’90s Chicago house music from a popular look at what Chicago actually played on radio stations back then, and a careful selection of the classics handpicked by me. The first track of this particular mix session, ‘Another Sleepless Night’ by Shawn Christopher, is a track to always keep in your record bag.”
