How heavy my heart is. The Pulse nightclub massacre, Syria, the assassination of Jo Cox, Donald Trump — it’s too much negativity to process. Life always presents challenges, but lately hatred and barbarism seem to be lurking at every turn. For the past few days I’ve found solace in DJ Drez’s Big Shot Guest Mix. His thoughtful downtempo journey has been a therapeutic respite from the din of bad news. I’m so grateful for the positivity it’s given me and hope it will give you some comfort too.
On the mix the LA-based DJ/producer/musician, who released his Alpine Swift album this month on Nectar Drop Music, weaves a tapestry of classic soul/R&B (Sade, Roy Ayers, Tom Scott), hip-hop (Bankroll Fresh, Oddisee) and chilled electronica (Tranquility Bass, Odesza). “For me this mix is like thinking out loud, a short journey into my head expressing different thoughts, flavors and taste,” says DJ Drez. “I love music that tells stories literally with words and sonically where the mind travels into perception, imagination and dreams.” Here’s hoping for more stories with a happier endings.
