Mark Spoon, half of the pioneering ‘90s German trance duo Jam and Spoon, has died of a heart attack. Spoon, whose real name was Markus Loffel, was found dead in his Berlin home on January 9. According to published reports, he was either 39 or 41.
Spoon formed Jam and Spoon with Jam El Mar in the early ‘90s. The group’s debut album, Tripomatic Fairytales, became a transatlantic hit in 1993 and featured chart-topping singles “Right in the Night” featuring vocalist Plavka. The duo went on to remix tracks by Frankie Goes to Hollywood (“Relax”), Moby (“Go”), Deep Forest and Pet Shop Boys. They also recorded under the Tokyo Ghetto Pussy alias and forged their Top 10 club hit, “Stella.” Also an A&R man and club owner, Loffel discovered Euro-trance pop star Dr Alban.
