Big Shot has learned the funeral for Erick Morillo will take place at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 9. According to information shared on social media, the funeral will be live-streamed on Morillo’s social media accounts.
In lieu of flowers, Morillo’s family is asking for donations to be made to the Brian P. Stack Civic Association in the late DJ’s honor. The non-profit “gives back to the youth and families of Union City[, New Jersey]” where Morillo grew up.
Stack, a former mayor of Union City, is a Democratic Party politician who serves in the New Jersey Senate. During Stack’s tenure as mayor of Union City, a street was named in Morillo’s honor in 2012.
“It’s important to recognize those in the community who contribute to our hometown,” Stack said at the ceremony honoring Morillo. “We can all be proud to call Erick a part of our community.”
Stack’s association currently has a failing rating from Charity Navigator, an independent organization that evaluates how effectively non-profits are run by using publicly available tax returns.
Morillo’s body was found at his home on September 1 by Miami Beach police. The circumstances behind the globetrotting DJ/producer’s death are not yet known.
Miami Beach Police Public Information Officer Ernesto Rodriguez said that there were no apparent signs of foul play and that the cause of death will be determined by the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office.
Morillo was arrested and charged with sexual battery in August for an offense on a fellow DJ that allegedly took place at his home in Miami Beach in December. The female victim “reported waking up nude on the bed, with Mr. Morillo standing on the side of the bed also nude,” according to the arrest report.
Morillo turned himself in with his attorney after the results of a rape kit came back and tested positive for Morillo’s DNA.
Morillo, 49, was scheduled to appear in court last Friday.
Update: 6:15 pm. Erick Morillo’s family posted a statement about the funeral.
