Here’s a story that took us by surprise. Legendary NYC-based DJ/producer David Morales, 56, was arrested today at Fukuoka Airport in Japan on suspicion of smuggling 0.3 grams of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, also known as ecstasy (MDMA), from Hong Kong to Fukuoka Airport.
According to published reports, the Grammy-winning Morales, told police the drugs were not his and were likely slipped into his belongings.
The drugs were reportedly discovered by a customs officer who noticed a plastic bag containing white crystals in Morales’ luggage.
Morales was visiting Japan to play Sound Museum Vision, an event in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward, on Oct. 7. His set has been canceled as a result of his arrest.
Japan has extremely strict drug laws. In 1980, Paul McCartney was imprisoned for nine days and nearly sentenced to seven years in jail for possessing half a pound of marijuana.
