Last month Lane 8 (a.k.a. Daniel Goldstein) released his superb debut album, Rise, on Anjunadeep. Included on our list of essential albums of July, the “rousing, deeply emotional” affair as we described it features oodles of deep, warm bass and a tad of glitch, setting the framework for standout collaborations with Lulu James, Patrick Baker, Solomon Grey and Matthew Dear.
With a slew of festival dates (Coachella, Bestival) under his belt and an upcoming U.S. tour in the fall on the horizon, we asked Goldstein to share his thoughts on five songs currently rocking his world.
Lane 8 plays Ilesoniq Festival in Montreal on August 14, Belsonic in Belfast on August 22 and Sun City Music Festival in El Paso, Texas on September 5.
1. Todd Terje – “Strandbar” (Joakim Remix)
Super bouncy remix from Joakim — really cool to see him upping the BPMs a bit from past releases. When you hear this out you can’t really help but move, and it has a beautiful melodic turn halfway through when the bassline comes in. Great remix of an already-classic Terje tune.
2. Mura Masa – “Lovesick Fuck”
Not one I’d play in my DJ sets, but loving this tune from Mura Masa. It has really unique textures and just the right amount of quirkiness for a pop track. Really well done!
3. Eric Prydz – “Opus”
Anthem alert! It’s not very often that I go for a big-room track, but something about his stuff just grabs me — it’s big, melodic, complex, danceable, classy. Alright, enough superlatives! Eric Prydz just makes amazing main stage kind of music and is pretty much alone in that from what I can tell!
4. Hayden James – “Something About You” (ODESZA Remix)
Loved the original, and this takes it to a completely different level. The piano line in the intro is just pure, pure inspiration.
5. Maribou State – “Wallflower”
Maribou State’s album Portraits is my favorite album this year — actually it’s the only album I’ve listened to repeatedly in a while because it’s that good. Was honored to be able to remix this track — one of my upcoming releases this fall!
